Happy Christmas: Buon Natale
Happy Christmas or Buon Natale!
We all wish you the very best for Christmas, and hope you get to spend time relaxing with friends and family, sharing meals together and the odd glass or two. In Le Marche there isn’t too much razzmatazz around Christmas. It is largely a time to spend with families and based around Catholic traditions, with the bells of midnight mass sounding out all over the countryside on Christmas Eve.
I was enjoying some family time yesterday in Fermo, where the piazza has been turned into an ice rink! Great fun.
What caught my eye was the exhibition of nativity scenes or presepi. A tradition very important to Italians and every village has a model sized town of Bethlehem, featuring the stable scene of Jesus’ birth. The presepe scene is also placed in the homes here and can be very elaborate, taking over whole rooms. One nativity scene in the exhibition was entirely made out of pasta! Italians manage to get a foodie theme in everywhere it seems!
